In the face of research failures to find a simple pill to cure for dementia, Dr. Powell gives us a passionate argument for shifting the focus more to *care*. She takes us on a tour of the different ways society has tried to deal with dementia in history – ignorance, mental institutions, big-budget care facilities, as well as the different ways that politics, and entrenched academic careers, and media images, have shaped the efforts to deal with ever-growing numbers of dementia cases. Her conclusions: take a holistic look at the many different ways dementia can manifest in an individual, and plan for the best care and quality of life possible, dementia or not. Anyone who fears their own cognitive decline, or cares for someone at risk for dementia, should take a good, comforting, forthright read.
