I was hesitant to read this book due to the low reviews it had from critics and other readers. While it may not be as fast-moving as the first two books, it was definitely just as hard to put down. This book concentrates on the love triangle between Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky, which was fine by me, as it was what most held my interest from the previous book. There are huge revelations here- from ancient and fae legends and history, to who really murdered all the couples Olivia's parents were charged with murdering, to who exactly the town of Cainsville is comprised of, and where Ricky's motorcycle gang falls in all of it. Throughout it all, Olivia and Gabriel keep getting more interesting, challenging themselves, make tough choices, fighting, reconciling, second-guessing each other. What makes the love triangle tiring is that Ricky is just too perfect- attractive, sensitive, brave, and supportive. Armstrong tries to make him a little bad with the whole motorcycle gang thing, but he's just super boring to read about. Everything gets deeper, more explained and yet more mysterious at the same time. And nothing gets too resolved at the end, which may leave readers frustrated for having clung onto this dark and winding ride. I like Armstrong's writing style- she makes lore and legends and soul-searching very frank and amusing. I look forward to the next book.
