Explores the formative years of the renowned author's life as he finds friendship, courage, and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and weather love and loss together, including the author's tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. Unexpectedly brilliant movie that shows us the life of a writer who was responsible for the public’s love of fantasy fiction, art and associated media. Not knowing much about the writer this gave an interesting and very human depiction of him. Similar to Hopkins playing C.S. Lewis in Shadowlands the acting is solid although the this movie is dark and cerebral so don’t expect Peter Jackson special effects or energy.

The film starts out beautifully with breathtaking scenery. The story flows quickly from Tolkien's childhood loss to his teens, where we meet his best friends and love.

Then war intersperses the rosy past with gore and death and the story loses momentum, like finishing the last quarter of a losing game. All I remembered was that Tolkien changed majors because he would lose his scholarship. The screenwriter could have ended this more poetically rather than predictably. This biopic doesn't really add much to an understanding or appreciation of Tolkien and his works.

How on earth did the author dreamed up the magical epic stories about Hobbits and LOTR? Excellent answers are in this period drama: All of these (depicted in film) experiences would later inspire him to write his famous Middle-earth novels. Because of the WWI backdrops, more intriguing than other biopics on writers like Goodbye Christopher Robin 2018 (A.A. Milne also fought in the Battle of the Somme,) and The Man Who Invented Christmas (Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol) 2017.

I'm not sure if its historically accurate, but this is a very inspiring movie on several levels, which also makes me want to rewatch/reread the LOTR with new insight.

There are many great quotes in this movie.

Seeing how Tolkien's early life influenced his writing made his stories meaningful on a whole different level.

Admirable film showing the early trials and tribulations of JRR Tolkien. Not quite 100% factual, but the spirit is there.

At this point, I expect the Tolkien Estate to just be bitter and hate everything done for their patron, this movie included. In spite of their scathing opinion, I enjoyed this movie and recommend it to fans of his work.

An excellent film describing Tolkien's difficult childhood and the trauma of the Fist World War. This explains how he was able to produce the LOTR. Fans need to see this film.

This is a must see for all Tolkien fans. It sets up the story of how he created the Fellowship and the reasoning behind Mordor and the quest for the one ring.

There was so many little tidbits of facts and information in there that made me go oh oh oh!
Tolkien was a fascinating man and this tiny glimpse into his creativity was astonishing.

Nicholas Hoult did a wonderful job portraying the great writer.

However, if you are not a Lord of the Rings fan or of World War 1, this might not be your cup of tea.

Love his writing but, the movie is dry and boring!
