On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by fierce loyalty, a penchant for petty theft and playful grifting. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend the tenuous, below-the-rader existence and test their quietly radical belief that it is love -- not blood -- that defines a family.

As someone who enjoys foreign films I wanted to get my hands on this well-reviewed one. I did, and found it to be enjoyable if less than compelling. In fact, I turned it off mid-way through only to resume watching the following day. It presents a nice, interesting story that moves along not quite slowly bt also not swiftly. Though someone old me they thought this film was a masterpiece I did not. 4 stars out of 5 I'd say, but if you're looking for a thoughtful foreign film, have a look.

The ending was not what you typically want but I wasnt upset. It was different and I enjoyed watching it. I would watch it again. Its subtitled, so you have to actually watch it and read what theyre saying unless you know the language already.

An interesting movie.

Is it a story of a family, or a gang? What IS a family? The film skillfully tells us about very simple things in very simple language. A calm, timeless, realistic, atmospheric, insightful drama by Hirokazu Kore-eda, a Japanese film director, tells us about a “family” that looks happy, but inside is full of secrets and serious crimes.
The Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival (2018), César Award for Best Foreign Film (2019), Asian Film Award for Best Film, Japan Academy Prize for Picture of the Year.

One of the best films I've seen in a while. Yes it does start a little slow, but the last act is well worth the wait. Spoiler alert! There's no CGI in this picture, and it's still great. Go figure...

A beautiful film, that starts slowly, using it's first 90 minutes to build a story of a "family" that has been assembled, building up layer upon layer, hinting at hidden secrets, until the weight of all of that buildup collapses, and reveals heartbreaking truths. The last 30 minutes are an especially powerful and emotional piece of filmmaking, which works in no small measure due to the delicate buildup the director has taken such care with. The final shots of the movie are a haunting conclusion to an exploration of what makes a family, and a humanistic masterpiece expertly told by a director with a beautifully deft touch.

I found it laboriously slow at times of just the day-to-day goings on of a criminal family trying to survive in modern day Japan. It's well done.. all English subtitled tho.

If you like a movie about lovable others in the style of Stephen Spielberg (or Woody Allen) then this one is for you.

If you want a movie where twisted adults prey on abandoned children to use them for their nefarious devices take a look at the Paul Morrissey/Andy Warhol item, "Mixed Blood".

Kore-Eda Hirokazu once again explores the form of family - this time in the underbelly of Tokyo
excellent performances all the way around and the last for Kirin Kiki, who appeared in 6 of his films. I recommend all of his films

Do you think she... chose us?
-Usually, you can't choose your own parents. But then, maybe it's stronger when you choose them yourself.
What is?
- What is... The bond.
===
But sometimes, it's better to choose your own family. If only not to have expectations...
===
The reason they hit you... isn't because you are bad. If they say they hit you
because they love you, that is a lie. If they love you, if they really love you, this is what you do... This is what you do... (hugging her tight...)
===
But won't they get mad at you?
-No different if I go back now.
===
We're... connected in our hearts, not down here.
-Cut it out! Sounds fishy.
How do you think we're connected?
-Money.
Normally... But we're not normal.
