Atlee Pine, an FBI special agent assigned to the remote wilds of the western United States. Ever since her twin sister was abducted by a notorious serial killer at age five, Atlee has spent her life hunting down those who hurt others. And she's the best at it. She could be one of the Bureau's top criminal profilers, if she didn't prefer catching criminals in the vast wilderness of the West to climbing the career ladder in the D.C. office. Her chosen mission is a lonesome one--but that suits her just fine. Now, Atlee is called in to investigate the mutilated carcass of a mule found in the Grand Canyon--and hopefully, solve the disappearance of its rider. But this isn't the only recent disappearance. In fact, it may be just the first clue, the key to unraveling a rash of other similar missing persons cases in the canyon.

David Baldacci has written another great story in LONG ROAD TO MERCY. The reasoning behind the title selection becomes obvious in the first couple chapters. After that, it is sort of in the background for the rest of the book, but is not the main plot of this story. Baldacci has chosen to focus the book on a very interesting plot. As have so many thriller writers have done, his plot fits loosely (I hope) into current events in our country. But no spoilers on that from me. Lots of twists and turns in the book, and some really interesting characters. The main character is FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine, while Baldacci develops a sidekick for her in the form of her secretary, Carol Blum - and by the end of the book they are a team and both characters make for a great story. The very end of the book, takes us back to the beginning of the story and its title, and it is clearly a set-up (I think) for a sequel with Atlee and Blum. There is another interesting character in the book, a Park Ranger, who if a sequel happens, I am sure will be along for the ride. Enjoy.

First of all the title had nothing to do with the ridiculous story. Agent Pine must have been a "Super Human" person to have me believe all she endured, jumped up and continued on. I never was so disappointed with one of his books The only reason this book is on the bestseller list Is because of previous books. I would not waste my time to read this ridiculous book!

Threat must be realistic, hero must be realistic and the plot must flow. Writing is fine, thread of the narrative is OK, main character is good if a bit superhuman. Threat is from Mission Impossible and the combination of government agencies and people playing the bad guys is just plain out of hand. Conspiracies on this scale are impossible since a given in Government is no one can keep a secret. The military is many things but used by rogue generals and politicians against their own country-nope! Back to the drawing board, keep the three main characters and start over.

There is definitely an extent to which a government conspiracy can go,as well as an ability to fight it as an individual (as weird as it can be). This story goes way beyond the realistic with respect to both.

I was looking forward to this new character, but I was very disappointed, the story was very unrealistic. You're not always looking for reality in a fictional book, but you at least want to read something that could possibly be real!

Usually I really enjoy his books, however this was not the best he has written. There were times where the descriptions were way too much - i.e. as the workout that she was doing and the the journey out of the Grand Canyon was confusing. The story should have stuck with her search for her sister and more information on her possible killer. Instead we are lead into this "winding" and somewhat hard to follow story about the canyon and what is hidden there. Was disappointed in this book. This character and her assistant could be a great combination if the story was more plausible and not lost in the time consuming details that were found in this story. Better luck next time.

I was expecting a mystery. Agent Prine wants to find out what happened to her sister. Instead the whole book is a conspiracy theory that is about as logical as a badly-written 1980s spy show. I was very disappointed.

Disappointed. Plot became too political for me. I didn't understand it. David Baldacci is one of my favourite authors so didn't expect disappointment.

There comes a time when one of your favourite authors stumbles because they have written so much and laboured so hard to meet the grueling annual publication timetable. This time the stumble is more like a fatal fall for me. Basically, while I really admire Baldacci's work and have given it so many stars over the years, IMHO this time he has lost the plot with a terrible plot (excuse the unintended pun).

First female protagonist for this author/ lawyer....Might me another movie adaptation, too. Let's sink our teeth into it!:-)
