A Great Books for Great Kids pick. Ethan, sixth-grader and son of a famous illustrator, has a problem. His classmates are counting on him to do the drawings for their graphic novel project. Ethan has led them to believe he is an artist like his dad, but the truth is he can't draw more than a stick figure. When a blotch of ink from one of his dad's sketches comes to life, it seems to be the answer he needs. But "Inkling" will end up getting Ethan into even deeper trouble. How will he find his way out? Grades 4-6.

This clever, original concept for a book takes a look at the difficult issues of the loss of a parent to illness and the neglect that may follow. It has shadows of 'When a Monster Calls' but is not as dark and scary. Ethan lives with his grieving father and his sister who has Down Syndrome. He is being forced to assume more and more responsibilities for taking care of her and of himself as his father draws away from them. Interestingly, his father is a graphic artist author who has developed writer's block, a condition that has left the ink in his sketch pad to coalesce and separate from the paper so that it comes to life as an inkblot that feeds on text and drawings. Ethan befriends 'Inkling' and it helps him draw his graphic novel, a school group assignment. The plot develops into a dangerous, suspenseful situation. It is a great read for kids, even reluctant readers, who will find a genuine, well developed, relatable character in Ethan.

"Ethan thought for a moment. Everything needed a name. What did you call a thing made of ink? An ink thing? Inkthing. Inkling!

"Inkling!" he said. "Do you like that name?"

The ink was still for a moment, as if considering. A tiny tip reached out and wrote: YES
