Characters: 8/10
Plot: 8/10
Writing: 10/10

The world-building was immersive and beautiful. The writing itself was enjoyable--dramatic without being over-the-top.

I had actually forgotten that this was an Evil Queen retelling (I read the description ages ago, then picked it up without re-reading the blurb). Without that in my mind, it was really interesting to delve into such a dark and flawed character. It *felt* like a villain backstory even though I wasn't consciously thinking of the fairytale, and I liked it. It was disturbing, yet understandable to get into Xifeng's perspective. I was rooting for her to reach her goal even as I hated the goal itself (and how she went about achieving it).

I hate gore, and I particularly hate cannibalism--but I was strangely not grossed-out by this. There's a kind of distance to it because of the magical implications. Even though Dao's descriptions were vivid, they weren't intentionally disgusting.

I really enjoyed the setting and the characters were well developed. I just couldn't enjoy the nature of the protagonist's villainy, which kept me from liking it more.

I think this was probably one of the more interesting fantasy novels I read in 2017. It was refreshing, not having an extremely self-righteous protagonist. Especially since you don’t know if she’s the protagonist or antagonist.
