This graphic adaptation, authorized by the Anne Frank Foundation and brought to life by the talented Ari Folman, is, in a word, stunning. The illustrations are whimsical and powerful in turn; they bring Anne's flights of fancy and sardonic observations to life but still maintain gravitas in the more serious moments of her diary. Folman does a spectacular job of adapting the text as well. As he acknowledges in his adapter's note, if he preserved the text of Anne's diary in its entirety, the graphic novel would be over 3,500 pages long! Some people find it sacrilege to edit the original text of a work, but I found his solutions to this dilemma to be very creative and inspirational. Some diary entries are preserved in their entirety, while others are folded into single pages or replaced entirely with illustrations. As a whole, I found it a masterpiece, and it made me want to reread the original Diary of Anne Frank! I don't think this graphic adaptation will ever replace the original work, nor should it, but it is a more accessible alternative for reluctant readers, makes a great companion to the original text, and is a lovely way for readers to revisit a book they may have read as a child.

This is a beautiful adaptation of the timeless Diary of a Young Girl, which poignantly conveys all the emotional turbulence of teeanger-dom, universal to us all. --Rachel (For more of Rachel's suggestions, follow WoodneathRachel)

It's been a while since I read "Diary of a Young Girl," but this graphic adaptation is beautiful. It does an excellent job of capturing the timeless nature of Anne Frank's writing, which details her early teen years spent in hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland. Some illustrations are fantastical while others are starkly realistic - but all convey Anne's struggles as she navigates the emotional turbulence of teenager-dom, complicated by the fact that her family could, at any moment, be discovered and sent to a concentration camp.

I think this was a really well done adaptation of "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank. I really enjoyed the art work, it brought the story to life. I think this version would be good alongside the original text. It would be a great option for reluctant readers and maybe younger readers. Also highly recommend to people who have already read the original.
