An outstanding children’s novel which is funny, mysterious, scary, exciting, and deeply emotional, and which is filled with the power of love. This is the fourth (and presumably final) book in the “Mo and Dale Mysteries”, which began with the Newbery Honor Book, *Three Times Lucky.* You won’t find a better series of non-fantasy books for children anywhere.

Mo is a 6th grader in the tiny town of Tupelo Landing, North Carolina. As a baby, she was found floating down the river on a signboard following a hurricane and adopted by the Colonel and Lana, who run the café that is the social center of town. Mo is obsessed to find her “Upstream Mother”, as she refers to the woman she assumes floated her down the river, and that search is a subplot for each book.

In this book, Mo has been given several new clues about her Upstream Mother and has her friends trying all kinds of research angles to find her. But at the same time a shady character has come to town, claiming to have clues that show that the pirate Blackbird’s treasure must be buried in Tupelo Landing. When these clues fit with stories from the families of other Tupelo Landing families, the treasure hunt is on.

Mo is one of the great characters of children’s literature, kind of a combination of Tom Sawyer, Scout Finch, and Tatum O’Neal’s character in the film *Paper Moon*. All of these books are great read-alouds.

Just finished reading this book and loved it. It really feels like you're part of the story. Definitely recommend it.
