Why did the German Church embrace Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party? And what was a good German, a deeply religious and spiritual man, to do about it? Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a young German theologian who offered one of the first clear voices of resistance to Adolf Hitler. Bonhoeffer openly challenged his church to stand with the Jews in their time of greatest need. And he eventually joined to plots to kill Hitler. Extensive research in the US and Europe brings to life this amazing story of moral courage. Extraordinary archival footage is interwoven with interviews with friends, family students of Bonhoeffer, leading historians and theologians. The words of Bonhoeffer are read by actor Klaus Maria Brandauer.

Loved the film. While Bonhoeffer is a favorite of mine, this film is for both the Christian who desires to deeper know Dietrich's essay "Ethics" and the historian who desires to know the resistance within Nazi Germany.

Bonhoeffer planned to travel to India to meet Gandhi about his non-violent activism. It is intriguing to think how 20th century history might have changed if Bonhoeffer had brought "satyagraha" back to Germany to oppose Hitler and the Nazi Party.

For practicing Christians, who want to live the real thing, this gives you a glimpse of the dedication required.

I especially cherish Bonhoeffer's respect for the negro Spirituals, which he imported into his Lutheran tradition, and his rejection of the lame theology, that the sermon on The Mount was just a bunch of good ideas.

I really liked how the history was presented, although there was a lot of religious discussion. Still, it is worth understanding what makes one a conscientious resistor.

Surprisingly well done for a documentary that wasn't done by BBC or History Channel or A&E. A lot of details.

No closed-captions. With the exception of intermittent interviews w/ German speaking individuals, the entire film is narrated in English; frequently with a simultaneous music background. Unwatchable since the soundtrack is barely audible.
