1941. As Hitler's forces smash into Soviet territory, annihilating the Red Army divisions in its path, a lone German scout plane is forced down. Contained within the briefcase of its passenger is the seemingly inconsequential painting of a hyalophoria cecropia, otherwise known as a red moth. Only Stalin suspects that the picture might be more significant than it appears. The real treasure that is being sought is a secret and highly prized possession of the Romanovs, once considered to be the 8th wonder of the world.

Excellent read. Eastland makes you feel the Siberian cold, smell the Russian tobacco smoke, want for clean water or even a crust of moldy bread. Major Kirov is the needle that weaves for Inspector Pekkala. Eastland writes with less than1% filler in this book which makes it wanted reading. The days of WW11 and Uncle Joe.

One of the best in the Inspector Pekkala series, sending him perilously behind the German lines during WW2.
