Beautifully written, reads like a novel. I wanted to hold 12 year old Sarah in my arms and hug grown up Sarah.

This was such a heartfelt yet tough read. The author details her experiences as a child when her mother is murdered and her killer finally captured 12 years later. It flashes back and forth between loving memories of her and her mother to the present day. Her account of the actual murder and the subsequent trial were so tough to read but this is a book well worth it.

I read this book in one sitting. The ghastly murder of a young, single mom in a small town makes us cringe. It destroys our ideals of small-town-American. But it also makes us take a good look at ourselves and ask why it is that we still, in the back of minds, believe that somehow, free-spirited women get what they deserve when rape and murder happen. When do we start looking at the white-male-privilege , destructive notions that promote and defend this mindset?

This book starts out so strong, but looses its path halfway through. Still, a great read for fans of true crime such as Serial and The Making of a Murderer.

The author offers a compelling read before the murder and after the murder.
