more action adventure than historical.. but good for a WW 1 fly boy movie

I enjoyed this movie. Mind boggling to learn that American men went to fight for France before the U. S. joined the war. I know for sure that much of the plot was true. I think their motivation had more to do with flying than it did helping the French. The early days of aviation are really interesting. The night rescue scene seems very unlikely to me, but I'm willing to buy into everything else. As this is the centennial for WWI, this is only 1 of the films & documentaries I've watched. This is just another piece of the story that made that war so odd.
Don't miss the director's commentary. It contains quite a bit of history, including the facts behind the characters & events in the story.

Watching the aerial fight scenes really made me aware of how brave those pilots had to be to fly in those fragile planes with no armor or parachutes. That being said, though I enjoyed the (slightly fakey looking) special effects, the storyline was predictable and, other than the traumatized, war worn pilot mentor, I found the characters rather dull and wooden.
Interesting to watch from a historical point of view, but the plot was definitely lacking.

Very well done movie. A pleasure to watch. I would recommend this movie for all to see. No fast forwarding on this one. No falling asleep on this DVD!!!!!

Nov 25 2013.....I didn't like this movie. The soundtrack nearly drove me nuts, the airplane fight scenes looked to me like they were little toys zooming through the air, the romance was so corny it bored me, (I mean, how many goobie eyes could those two have for each other, and when they did their final kiss goodbye, her uncle's yelling at her to hurry up! Come on!), everything was so neat and clean, (it's a war....what's with that?) and even the pet lion was so well behaved, just like a big ole yellow lab? Come on. The best part of the movie for me was the END! (I found the picture of the real fellows interesting!) This movie struck me as something that would have been made in the 1960's. It was almost like Mary Poppins goes to war. Well, that's my opinion anyway!

Excellent, must see movie that tells the story of the brave men who fought during WWI.

Beautiful story of young men who risked their lives in the name of freedom. At all times these unknown heroes existed, but are never sung, and many times attacked by the very ones whose freedoms they protect. Must watch.

Sorry! No fast food (McDonald sandwiches) and fast love (doing sex acts as soon as they can in a typical movie: quick come and quick go). Only a platonic love, gallantry, and heroic actions. Good enough for family entertainment.
