In nine previously published short stories and one brand new, never-before-seen Sherlock Holmes mystery, Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand. At the heart of the collection is a prequel novella that begins with England’s declaration of war in 1914.

Desperate to read anything Mary Russell while waiting for the next book in the series (there will be a next one, right?), I picked up this book of short stories. A mixed bag really with some good, some just so-so. It read more like stories sort of thrown together from Laurie R. King's storyboard of unfinished ideas and thoughts. Still better than most of the genre. There will be a next book in the series, right?

I'm more a fan of novels than of short stories, but most of these are very long short stories--some are 75 pages or so. I thoroughly enjoyed the early ones, especially the one explaining the meeting of Holmes and Russell from his viewpoint, and the one about their wedding. The stories are mostly chronological. In one of the later ones, Mary is 92, and has "lost" Holmes when they escape from American tourists hounding them. If she's 92, how old is he? That's not very realistic, so no wonder she's panicky. Several of the stories use a nice epistolary method, with letters, postcards, and photographs. Thankfully, King adds transcriptions of the letters, because I had trouble reading the letters without that. In spite of the uneven quality, I'll take whatever Russell-Holmes I can get.

I really enjoyed the chapters about the early life of Mary Russell and of the marriage of her to Holmes. Several of the other chapters had very little interest for me and I was not sure they were added (several were self published), but the others were very useful in filling in details not in her previous novels.

After stumbling on The Beekeeper's Apprentice I sought this one out and it did not disappoint! Some time I will need to read Mr Conan Doyle's work :-) but in the mean time I'm loving Ms. Klinger's tales.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!! What a spectacular delight! I am currently waiting for the second book in the Mary Russell series and felt like I was missing my best friend until I stumbled upon this book which I thought would hold me over a bit. It is filled with "I wish" feelings, such as *I wish I had read Mary's War Journal in this book FIRST because it is like a prequel to "Beekeeper's Apprentice* and *I wish I had read some of the other books first because these stories were such spoilers* (which really only makes me SQUEAL with anticipation to read the remaining books in the series). I had to read the last story, "Stately Holmes," twice, which left me breathless. The illustrations are tiny in the Kindle version but regular-print reproductions follow each. Mary Russell fans: DO. NOT. MISS. THIS. BOOK. Amazing.

I discovered Laurie R King's Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Mystery series while stuck at an airport. I found the Moor and since I wanted something to take me away from a busy miserable day, it looked like just the ticket. It was.

King has an ability to create atmosphere and "real" characters. Mary Russell Mysteries is a collection of short stores that for those of us who have read the entire series fill in the gaps with some additional information. While the stories do stand alone, they really shine when you've read the series. If you ever read Sherlock Holmes mysteries by Conan Doyle, you'll appreciate the additional dimension that has been added to Holmes, Mycroft, Mrs. Hudson and the other characters . I strongly suggest you begin at the beginning with "The Beekeeper's Apprentice and get ready to enjoy yourself.

A terrific set of the Mary Russell short stories all in one place. Find out about Holmes' and Russell's wedding. Read the amazingly informative journal of Mary as WWI opens and she loses nearly everyone she has ever cared for. Touching, interesting, and fun, these stories fill in the gaps that serious readers of the series want answered.
