2011 Retailers Choice Award winner! The first in an epic two-book saga by beloved author Francine Rivers, this sweeping story explores the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters over several generations. Near the turn of the 20th century, fiery Marta leaves Switzerland determined to find life on her own terms. Her journey takes her through Europe and finally lands her with children and husband in tow in the central valley of California. Marta's experiences convince her that only the strong survive. Hildie, Marta's oldest daughter, has a heart to serve others, and her calling as a nurse gives her independence, if not the respect of her mother. Amid the drama of WWII, Hildie marries and begins a family of her own. She wants her daughter never to doubt her love-but the challenges of life conspire against her vow. Each woman is forced to confront her faulty but well-meaning desire to help her daughter find her God-given place in the world.

Wow! Francine Rivers continues to amaze me! I loved the two book series. I wish I knew what my mother kept bottled up inside, it took me a long time to realize it was not me that upset her.

Wow, this book just keeps on going and going. Its quite a Journey actually. There are so many lessons to learn within these pages. The story was altogether moving. Another excellent one by Rivers.

Totally worth reading. It is long but won't take long to read because the stories have you mezmorized! This is a "stay up til 2am" book- be warned! What a talented author!

I really enjoyed reading this book, and then the sequel, 'Her daughter's dream'. if you haven't read them, i definitely recommend them. If you have, read them again!

I enjoyed this book series very much. It was so interesting (in a sad way) to see the hurts and legacy of difficult Mother/Daughter relationships pass from one generation to the next. My only criticism would be that it seems it was a '4 book series in a 2 book sack' as it seemed to rush through and gloss over large portions of time. I would recommend it.

Highly recommend this book. This is one of her best, aside from the Mark of the Lion Series. Francine does an absolutely brilliant job in making you feel as if you're in the story; as if you could see this fictional story as true reality being played out right in front of you.

I know it takes time to develop these characters and storylines, but I wish she wrote more books, more quickly! I swallowed this nearly-500 paged book in less than a week!

I liked this book a lot. For being a teenager it was written well enough for me to understand and to be interested in. I love the story of the hurt betweeen Marta and Hildemara and how they both had a tough childhood. It was wonderful to see both of them start to overcome the pain that they had held on to all their lives. I cannot wait to read the next one. Francine Rivers always gives a good book for just what will interest me
