Based on the novel by Carrie Fisher about her life in the Hollywood fast lane. Suzanne Vale is a wise-cracking, vulnerable actress determined to jump start her failing career. Her mother, an aging movie star is the definitive portrait of Hollywood's gutsy glamour queens and, of course, offers her daughter only razor sharp humor and searing honesty.

After having read the book before seeing the film, I was very disappointed in the screenplay that Carrie Fisher worked out for the film. She wasn't true to the feelings and traits she expressed, exhibited in her book at all. The mother daughter relationship in the film was a Disney version of what's in the book. Shirley MacLaine plays the mother's role well,
Meryl Streep had a tougher time because the Vale character wasn't true to itself; it's just a one dimensional shell, if that. Fisher was in this for the money, she wasn't willing to focus drug addiction at all; this is a fairy tale flick.

Interesting, melodramatic peek into some of Carrie Fisher's upbringing. Lots of Hollywood privilege here and also a look at addiction. Quaid plays a manipulative manchild whose charm Fisher is able to leave behind.

As much as I love Meryl and Shirley, I would have much preferred it if Carrie and Debbie had played themselves. This film was missing something without that. It felt a little too caricaturish and I couldn't get into it unfortunately. Alas, this flick wasn't for me.

I loved Shirley MacLaine as Debbie Reynolds. About half way through I realized I had seen it before but I watched it again anyway.
