Perfect casting. McDowell and Depardieu seem like the unlikeliest two people whose characters fall in love. But they do. An excellent portrayal of how two opposites do attract. The acting is superb. Poignant and humorous. Very human. And romantic. One of Peter Weir's finest films.

First things first: yes, the clothes are distractingly terrible (it's from the early 90s). And yes, Andie McDowell and Gerard Depardieu make for an unlikely pairing of romantic leads. But that works for this story about a French immigrant and an urban gardener who enter into a marriage of convenience that spirals out of control when immigration services takes a closer look at their marriage than either of them had planned on. Heavier on the romance than the comedy and more naturalistic than the movies it gets compared to, GREEN CARD is well worth watching for the astonishingly great last 5 minutes alone.
