Traditional, mostly acoustic Americana at its best, without any traditional songs. The listener has the peculiar feeling that each song begins mellower than the previous one, but the recording as a whole never runs out of interest. The string-band mix of dobro, acoustic and electric guitars, fiddle, ‘cello, mandolin, banjo, and occasional percussion provide a magical and often understated (but at the same time sometimes massive and majestic!) backdrop for Ms. Jarosz’ vocals. Her singing style is straightforward, without much ornamentation or “extra notes”, but her voice lacks nothing in expressiveness. She sounds somewhere between Jennifer Knapp and Fiona Apple. Though she composed most of the songs herself, one of the highlights of the album is a Bob Dylan tune accompanied by a single ‘cello (pizzicato) – an excellent example of less being much more. The last two songs break all the standard rules of songwriting, and are very interesting musically. Waiting to hear more…

Very strong performance of Bob Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate", with cello accompaniment.

"Book of Right-On" deserves to become a jazz standard.

I liked everything on this record. Sarah Jarosz has deep roots in bluegrass, and brings a special intensity to songs in that style. But she has moved far beyond the bluegrass conventions with this record.

Highly recommended.
