"In this novel, the latest in the author's series of novels featuring Anna Pigeon, the author gathers together the many strings of Anna's past and finally reveals the story that her many fans have been long asking for. In 1995 and 35 years old, fresh off the bus from New York City and nursing a broken heart, Anna Pigeon takes a decidedly unglamorous job as a seasonal employee of the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. On her day off, Anna goes hiking into the park never to return. Her co-workers think she's simply moved on; her cabin is cleaned out and her things gone. But Anna herself wakes up, trapped at the bottom of a dry natural well, naked, without supplies and no clear memory of how she found herself in this situation. As she slowly pieces together her memory, it soon becomes clear that someone has trapped her there, in an inescapable prison, and no one knows that she is even missing. Plunged into a landscape and a plot she is unfit and untrained to handle, Anna Pigeon must muster the courage, determination and will to live that she didn't even know she still possessed to survive, outwit and triumph.

Barr never disappoints me. Of course, I've enjoyed some titles more than others, but her consistency is amazing. Her mysteries engage and surprise me, and her writing is far superior to many other authors of mystery series. Even after so many books, her Anna Pigeon stories are always interesting.

This is a prequel to the Anna series and in it we learn how and why Anna became a law enforcement park ranger. I couldn't put it down and it was - quite simply - a treat. Like usual.

Maybe because I ended up with the large print version . . . I found this hard to get through and unsatisfying .

This "prequel" to the series tells how Anna Pigeon left New York City to become a park ranger in Arizona.

Anna Pigeon’s first adventure, before she joined the park service, before she grew into the tough-as-nails park ranger we love to follow. In some ways, it makes the book very strange, because it’s not the character we know, or at least, not yet. It’s certainly gripping, though.

Nevada Barr continues to write great Anna Pigeon novels. I love the character, as I too am a park ranger and can relate to her. Based in the Glen Canyon area.

Like the Prey series by John Sanford, Ms. Barr has put new life into her Anna Pigeon series by going back in time to when Anna Pigeon was a new seasonal Park Ranger. John Sanford did a similar thing with his Lucas Davenport character. If you are a fan of these popular series, it is great fun to see the protagonists at a younger age

This is a prequel to the Anna Pigeon book series. The Anna that we meet here has not yet honed her sleuthing and survival skills. We learn a lot about her, including why she goes into the law enforcement aspect of rangering. I enjoyed the description of the scenery at the park as well.
