What a bone-chilling tale of heartbreak and sorrow for young Mr. Crepsley! I absolutely love this book even though it is quite a quick read. Now I believe we all understand why the title mentioned Crepsley, because of course it was about him! But one thing I don't understand about the title is why it says "Birth of a Killer". Now to be fair, I haven't read the full saga of Darren Shan or the rest of Larten's story either. I just don't recall him killing many things other than animals in the forest for his master. So I don't really believe the title makes much sense to that particular story, but my assumption is it is more of a foreboding type of title that is speaking of the near future. This adds to the story and makes it more mystifying and intense!

Larten's relationship with his master appears to waver as Larten ages. This is where we notice that Larten is a bit of a rebel! And when he is mad will he make a bad decision and not follow his wise master’s guidance?

I love his first impressions of Vampirism and the challenges he faces. I can't imagine what it must be like to lose a person who was so close to you, which is what brings me to my next point. Not only is there unfortunate loss that couldn't be stopped in the beginning of the book, but I’m sensing there is also going to be a loss that Larten must suffer because of his own decisions. Let's give a round of applause to Darren Shan!

really liked this book. it gives a new insight into Larten's backstory. I've read this and bk.2, as well as 7 "Saga of Darren Shan" books. this is a truly talented author, i think. this is called horror, but it was mild enough for me (NOT a horror fan) to enjoy. recommended!
