When Ethan meets Lena in Gatlin, both of their lives change forever. Ethan has been counting down the days until he can leave, but Lena has just arrived and is counting down the days to her birthday when she will change into what she is to become; dark and evil or light and good. She fears that the choice will not be hers. The strange power that she possess becomes harder and harder for her to conceal. When Ethan and Lena cross paths, literally, they become linked in a way that neither of them expect.
This story has many twists and turns. Supporting characters play important roles in the lives of both Lena and Ethan. The Gothic atmosphere is both well developed in the story, and also a part of the story that almost becomes a character itself. This is the first book in the Caster Chronicle series which starts off with a bang. This series is highly recommended.

Beautiful Creatures follows Ethan Wate and his life in a rural, conservative town named Gatlin in South Carolina. When a new girl (who happens to have supernatural powers) transfers into his class and he befriends her, a whole new side of Gatlin opens up - one he had no idea existed before. This is a good book. The relationship between Ethan and Lena (the transfer student) is nice, and the book has an interesting plot that makes you want to know more about the world of the story. However, the book is also littered with mostly unnecessary and boring scenes of Ethan going about his daily life, and has a couple of plot holes. Some of the supporting cast is also given a lot of development and turn out to be very likable characters, although the majority of them don’t get much development. Overall, if you have the time and are a fantasy buff, I’d recommend checking this book out. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.

My scale is 1-5. 1 being poor/low and 5 being great/high.

Age Group: YA

Cliché? ★★★★☆ (3.5)
I felt the romance going on between the two main characters was very cliché, but not the overall storyline. If it was I would have discontinued the book.

Illustrations:★★★☆☆ (2.5)
I didn’t particularly enjoy the illustrations. I thought they were a bit messy and disorganized.

Romance: ★★★☆☆
I felt that this manga portrayed the romance going on between the two main characters as very rushed and not fully developed. But I would understand this since the author tried to put as much storyline in the first book to get all the facts from the very large non-manga first book in the manga.

Angst: ★★★☆☆
I felt that there was angst between the two teens, but bot so much that it annoyed me to the point of discontinuing.

Number of Books in Series: 1 (they discontinued publishing after this book)

Mythology/Creatures: Witches, mundanes, and animal shifters

Character Development:★★★☆☆ (2.5)
I feel that the characters were developed, but were too scattered to bring alive in my mind. If that makes sense at all.

I would, but they never continued publishing on this book series into a manga series.

Characters: 9/10
Plot: 7/10
Writing: 10/10
I'm not one to normally notice setting, but the worldbuilding was very well done. It truly felt like a place that people had lived in for generations, steeped in its own unique history.
The romance was a little Twilight-esque with the intense feeling of "we were meant to be together," but this book does it MUCH better. There's clearly a magical tie between the two characters that really establishes anything that's over-the-top.
They didn't give away too much too fast with the magic system and the mystery; everything was revealed in its proper time. However, I still feel a bit out of it, like I'm still not entirely sure what's going on. I'm going to read the sequel and see if this unresolved feeling gets tied up as the story progresses.

This intellectual, romantic and thrilling novel is a must read. Beautiful Creatures takes place in the small southern town of Gatlin in South Carolina. Since Gatlin has a history of revolution and civil war, it comes with many secrets and legends. Along with being a small town in the middle of nowhere. It is also home to narrow minded people that despise the idea of “different”. The town is run by the DAR which is a group of ladies who run their controversial errands in the name of religion. Also, the cheerleaders and jocks have control over the local high school. Within these people is a handsome boy named Ethan Wate. He is smart, good at basketball, good looking, and has a different mindset than the typical townee. Even though he is the high school sweetheart of Gatlin he wants to leave the small town ASAP. Ever since his mother died he's been visioning awfully strange nightmares at night that repeat. When Macon Ravenwood’s niece moves into Gatlin chaos arrives in the town. At the first sight of the compelling face of Lena, Ethan realizes she was the girl he’s been trying to save in his dreams. There’s a weird connection between them that is hated upon by the rest of the townies. Ethan’s feelings attach him to Lena. They both fall in a forbidden love. If you are looking for a romantic thriller this is a great read.

Such a good book. The amazing plot and intriguing characters keep you hooked till the end. The entire concept of the star-crossed lovers and the curse leave readers wanting more. Can't wait to read the next books in the series.

This book begins in a stagnant South Carolina town, or so Ethan believes. After Lena arrives in Gatlin, Ethan discovers a bizarre and magical underworld that has always existed in his seemingly boring hometown. My main complaint is that the book was very repetitive, and the story could have been told in half as many pages.

The story has an appeal and it's one of those books you want to read until the end. The characters are truly relatable even though their lives are supernatural and that's what makes the book interesting to read. I really enjoyed the irony of how fate destined the main characters, a jock and an oddball, to be together no matter how complicated things became or what opposition they faced from their families and friends. The authors also do a great job of putting a supernatural storyline into the setting of a small southern town and the contrast is intriguing, especially in the flashbacks to the 1800's. Would recommend to others to read.

I really do like the ideas behind this book. "Casters" who could manipulate magic? Twisted families? Small town with hidden secrets? Definitely my kind of books. Oh yes, and throw in a pair of Romeo and Juliet unlikely-worthy couple, and there you have it. I saw this on a recommended shelf and decided to give it a go. And I do really wish I stopped here because it honestly didn't get any better from this ending. I ship Lena and Ethan, especially their beginning, but it kind of dropped my interest after this book. I am not sure if the movie is better, but apparently I should give that a try too, according to a friend who "loved it". 4/5 stars

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is set in fictional Gatlin, South Carolina. The novel is told by protagonist Ethan Wate who lives with his writer father and housekeeper Amma who is “more like [Ethan’s] grandmother.”[2] The story begins on the first day of Ethan’s sophomore year when he wakes up from a recurring dream he’s been having about a girl he doesn’t know. That morning he finds a “creepy- almost hypnotic,” [3] song called Sixteen Moons on his iPod and also notices the smell of rosemary and lemon. At school Ethan find out there is a new girl this year which is surprisingly because Gatlin “hadn’t had a new girl in school since the 3rd grade,”[4] the new girl is “old man Ravenwood’s niece.” [5] Macon Melchizedek Ravenwood is the town shut in and is often compared to the character Boo Radley from To Kill A Mocking Bird in the novel. Ethan later hears Lena playing Sixteen Moons in band.
When Ethan drives her home he almost runs over Lena who is standing on the road in the middle of the storm looking for someone to help with her broken down car. When Ethan notices she smells like lemon and rosemary he realized that Lena is the girl from his dreams. He soon learns that Lena is a Caster, a person who can use magic, and that on her sixteenth birthday she will be claimed for either Light or Dark. Ethan tries to find a way to save Lena from going Dark and solve the mystery of how he is connected to Lena. At the same time Lena is trying to handle the whole town turning against her “we don’t take kind to strangers [in Gatlin].”(Garcia 123) Lena and Ethan discover that they are connected through years of Gatlin and Caster history.

I liked this book. It was interesting, the paranormal aspects were fairly unique, and I love a story with a long family history like this one has.
But I just liked it. It never grabbed me and demanded that I keep reading. I think, mostly, this was because the pacing was off. There was too much time during the story when I was relaxed and not worried about whether the characters were going to get out of trouble. Sure, there were intense moments when I was glued to the pages, but then things slowed down too much and I was lulled into a strange sense of security. This made it too easy to set the book down.
Beautiful Creatures is a good story. I think it could have been great if it had been shorter, which would have increased the tension and kept the reader glued to the pages through the whole story. Or, at least, if it had a bit more depth to it with the characters and setting.
Overall, the only thing that really set it apart was the paranormal aspect, which was really interesting and unique. Unfortunately, it's not enough.
