From author Timothy Zahn, whose trilogy continued the saga of George Lucas' films, comes Specter of the Past. Now Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo must battle to safeguard the fledgling New Republic from a dead Imperial warlord—and from itself.
Specter of the Past is the first of a new series, The Hand of Thrawn. Princess Leia is trying desperately to hold the loose coalition of interests known as the New Republic together long enough to see the evil Empire finally vanquished. But in a stunning setback, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker discover that the pirate ships raiding New Republic transports are staffed with clones under the command of someone who claims to be Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Empire's most powerful warlord, believed dead for 10 years. Thrawn's plan for destroying the fragile New Republic seems well on the way to completion—unless Han, Leia, and Luke can stop it.
The Empire is tottering on the brink of collapse and the New Republic's coalition is riven by age-old animosities. As Princess Leia and Han Solo struggle to hold the New Republic together, Luke Skywalker pursues a mysterious group of pirate ships whose crews consist of clones. All the while, lurking in the shadows is the enigmatic Major Tierce, a disciple of the Emperor Palpatine, armed with his own dark plans for the New Republic and the Empire.

Specter Of The Past is an excellent title for this book. It brings up and references past events and characters from the whole Bantam Spectra era, especially the Thrawn Trilogy, and does a nice job of making the characters remember all their past adventures.
To me, Specter Of The Past was a setup novel for the next book in duology: Vision Of The Future. It builds up a lot of exciting action but leaves off at a to be continued which forces you read the next book if you want to find out what happens and how and if the conflicts are resolved. I was hoping for a little more suspense, but maybe Timothy Zahn saved it for Vision Of The Future. I think it's best to read The Thrawn Trilogy and Outbound Flight first before reading this duology because there a lot of references to them, (as I already said), and it may be a little confusing to someone who has no idea what's going on or why some characters are really even important.

I liked the Hand of Thrawn duology, it was fairly well-developed and a nice addition to the SW Expanded Universe. I must admit I read the Thrawn trilogy and duology all in one month so some of the details are a but fuzzy :)
