Jane Austen had some wonderfully fun and fun-to-hate older characters in her novels, and closely looking at them can expand our understanding of the Regency period, the politics of the novels, and the underlying critique of the courtship narrative that her novels present. Comparing the film adaptations to her novels opens up interesting questions about our modern understanding of aging and allows us to see the lasting influence of Austen and the views on aging during this period of history.
